The Importance of Wig Drying Cabinets

As the name suggests, wig drying cabinets are used to dry wigs for use in theatre and film productions. Wigs can be very expensive to buy and therefore need cleaning regularly to keep them in great condition – which is why a wig drying cabinet is so important.

Of course, there are other ways to dry wigs. Human hair needs special care and maintenance to keep it in tip-top condition – which includes delicate handling with minimal heat. You can dry them naturally by patting the hair with a towel to remove the excess moisture and leaving the wig on a mannequin, for the air to do its job.

However, unless the temperature in the room is warm, wigs can be vulnerable to microbial growth and mildew. And you could also use a hairdryer – although it would need to be on the lowest and coolest settings.

But nothing is more effective than a wig drying cabinet and here at QED Scientific, our wig drying cabinets ensure they are dried safely and thoroughly – making them as good as new for the next person who wears them.

Preventing overheating in a wig drying cabinet is crucial, regardless of whether the wigs are synthetic or human hair. As such, our wig drying cabinets have internal fans, accurate temperature control and an independent overheat safety production – making them a favourite with many theatres, as well as further education colleges for delivering training to the next generation of wig makers in the UK and overseas.

If you are working on large-scale theatre productions, you’ll likely have a large number of wigs that need drying. And a wig drying cabinet is perfect for this use. As a quicker and more convenient method of getting them dry for the next performance, with minimal handling.

Whilst wig drying cabinets are really important when it comes to the care of wigs, it’s also important to care for them prior to drying, which can keep them looking like new – and hygienic – for years to come.

Tips for washing wigs

·         Use water which is lukewarm to the touch

·         A sulphate-free shampoo must be used – most wig makers change the colour of the wigs using chemicals and this particular shampoo will provide added moisture retention

·         Don’t rub the wigs roughly, as you may do when washing your own hair, as it makes it harder. For hair that requires deeper cleaning, it’s advisable to take sections of the hair and gently squeeze the shampoo into them

·         Thoroughly rinse the hair – gently – making sure you don’t wring it, as this can cause damage to the wig

·         It’s also recommended you use Argon or Jojoba oil, as they contain natural oils that mimic natural hair oil production. It will also help to prevent tangling
