Neonatal Equipment
Our Maternity and Neonatal equipment
Designed exclusively to ensure the smallest patients receive the best of care, neonatal equipment helps support and protect babies while in hospital, especially if they are undergoing newborn jaundice treatment.
Post-pregnancy women can also be supported through emergency surgeries, like C-sections, or through recovery from birth, using maternity equipment like fluid and blanket warming cabinets and warming sheets which encourage healing, help mothers come around from procedures faster if anaesthetised, and lower the risks of surgery in hospitals.
As such, our equipment range includes:
Our high-quality maternity and neonatal equipment are essential for both maternal and paediatric medicine, helping to increase patient health and keep patients in the best condition possible for further procedures - if needed.
Without them, patient outcomes for women and newborn babies would likely be much worse and could result in patient mortality.

Do you have any questions?
JAUNDICE MANAGEMENT
Caused by elevated bilirubin levels in the blood, if left untreated, newborn jaundice can cause brain damage, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, or even death.
Because of these risks, newborn jaundice treatment is prescribed, in which the infant’s skin is exposed to blue-green light phototherapy to break down the bilirubin molecules.
RADIANT WARMERS
RESUS WARMERS
Neonatal warmers, also called resus or infant radiant warmers, are neonatal equipment designed to warm the baby to achieve thermoregulation and improve their early outcomes.
WARMING CABINETS
Although widely used across hospitals, acute care, and care homes, warming cabinets are examples of maternity and neonatal equipment that can be used to warm blankets or IV fluids before they are given to patients.
This helps babies and mothers achieve thermoregulation and makes them more comfortable.
BREAST MILK STORAGE
Breast milk should be stored carefully at between 1-5°C, before it is given to the infant, to ensure the milk retains its quality and does not spoil.
Neonatal Incubators
Neonatal incubators are an example of essential neonatal equipment that can quite literally save the lives of infants or premature babies.
They give babies an ideal temperature and environment to help with organ development, allowing them to achieve their early milestones.
Neonatal maternity FAQs
Is maternity equipment necessary?
Maternity equipment is designed for use on new mothers immediately after delivery and includes fluid and blanket warming cabinets and the cotton blankets that can be heated up inside them.
This equipment is highly essential and is also beneficial to healing, as it helps to lower the risks of perioperative hypothermia. This is especially valuable for new mothers, as they may recovering from major surgery, including caesarean sections.
Warmed fluids and blankets helps them to:
Come round from anaesthetic faster
Reduce blood loss and SSIs – surgical site infections
Stop vasoconstriction and tissue hypoxia – which can be very harmful and sometimes deadly
Recover faster so they can be discharged and go home sooner
Feel more comfortable and happier while they stay in hospital

What is neonatal equipment?
As maternity equipment is designed for new mothers, neonatal equipment is for the smallest patients within healthcare.
The individualised circumstances of birth can be very taxing and in situations where birth complications occur or in situations of premature birth, the availability of neonatal equipment will rapidly improve patient outcomes.
This is especially true for neonatal incubators and radiant neonatal warmers.
Neonatal equipment can also be used to treat conditions, such as newborn jaundice – which uses phototherapy to break down potentially harmful bilirubin molecules which are then excreted naturally in the urine.
QED Scientific also supplies the specialised equipment to rapidly assess the bilirubin level. This is important both in the maternity area as well as with community midwives doing home visits.

What equipment and monitoring is in the NICU/SCBU?
After some deliveries, babies will be placed in the NICU/SCBU. This can be for further treatment, to receive round the clock care, or if they simply need to be closely observed.
It is worth noting that jaundice is present in about 60% of all full term and 80% of premature babies. About 20% of these will require immediate treatment. Moreover, it has been estimated that about 20% of babies having been sent home will develop jaundice within 3-5 days. This is why community midwives are essential for follow-up visits.
To help with monitoring, medical professionals can use neonatal equipment such as:
Infant resus warmers
Infant resus warmers are designed for babies who need immediate attention post-delivery so that blocked airways can be cleared, and other respiratory concerns dealt with. Newborns also need to be kept warm so resus units are also equipped with a heater. All infants will lose around 1-2°C in the 30 minutes post-delivery, which removes them from the optimum temperature range of 36.5-37°C and can affect metabolic activity, decreasing outcomes.
Each resus warmer can heat and monitor the infant, alerting medical staff if there is a temperature change and also includes resuscitation capabilities if needed.
Neonatal incubators
Designed for the most complex of needs, neonatal incubators offer a safe and controlled environment in which premature or poorly babies can rest, recuperate, and make progress toward desired outcomes.
All while being carefully monitored for the following:
Temperature
Humidity
Oxygen/ CO2 levels
Incubator working conditions
