Blood Plasma (FFP)
Blood plasma (FFP – fresh frozen plasma) is used to treat conditions in patients where there are low clotting factors, including factors V and VIII, or low levels of other blood proteins, as it contains plasma proteins and the full range of coagulation factors. It can also be used as the replacement fluid in plasma exchange.
Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is prepared when plasma is removed from donated blood and frozen in plasma freezers at -18°C or lower. This has to be done within 8 hours of collection.
The best way to preserve blood plasma (FFP) is through dedicated plasma freezers, which come in a variety of styles, including single and double door free-standing units, counter-top, chest freezer and under bench.
High quality, specialised plasma freezers include:

When the time comes to transfuse the fresh frozen plasma (FFP), you will need a high-quality, specially-designed machine, a plasma thawer, to warm up the blood plasma to the correct temperature.
KW Apparecchi has manufactured a rapid dry plasma thawer to offer safe and complete thawing of fresh frozen plasma (FFP), in just 15 minutes. Available in two and three pocket versions, housing up to 4 and 6 plasma packs respectively, other benefits include:
· Futureproof technology and total traceability
· Completely independent pockets that are used as separate thawers. You could start a second thaw whilst there is one already thawing in another pocket
· Easy-to-use user reporting, product and thawing information via an infra-red barcode reader
· 7-inch LCD TFT colour touch screen control
· Alarms for open door, cycle end and liquid presence
· Connectivity to USB/wi-fi/SD card and ethernet
· One-year warranty
· ISO13485, 93/42/EEC and CE certificates
There is also in-built thawing tracer software, which is fully downloadable and details data such as bag ID number, thawing start and end-times, user ID and temperature graph. This contributes to making a plasma thawer the safest way to thaw out fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
