Platelet agitators and incubators FAQs

What is the difference between a platelet agitator and a platelet incubator?

Though they both keep platelet products in the optimum condition, a platelet agitator and incubator are very different tools, offering different benefits within a blood bank or laboratory.

A platelet incubator provides accurate, stable conditions and a constant temperature of 22°C for the extracted platelets – meaning that they can go on to help with wound repair and blood clotting when transfused.

A platelet agitator fits inside the platelet incubator to provide a gentle horizontal motion of 16mm at a rate of 116 strokes per minute to allow for optimal air flow across products and stop them from clumping.

Why do platelets need to be kept separate?

After people donate blood, some donations are split into blood components.

This can include:

  • Red blood cells

  • Platelets

  • Plasma

Once separated, each product has a varying lifespan and must be stored in a different way to keep them within the optimum condition.

Platelets can be kept at ambient temperatures of 20–24°C for around 5-7 days, within a platelet incubator / agitator, to keep them in the best possible condition for future transfusion.

To find out more about what happens to blood components once donated, you can read our blog on this topic.

Can a platelet incubator and agitator hold multiple bags?

While some services may only need a bag or two of donated platelets, others can need tens to hundreds of bags a week – meaning that a larger capacity incubator and agitator is a necessity.

QED Scientific can supply a range of shelved platelet agitators, with a bagged capacity range of 48 to 680 bags (depending on the shelving used).

Worried that with such a large capacity machine you will need to interrupt the agitation process to access stock?

In these specialist machines, each shelf can be accessed or removed individually without interrupting the process for the other shelves and bags – meaning that each product is kept in the best condition throughout storage.
